Terms & Conditions

General provisions

This car rental agreement is entered into between Mountain Car ehf. (“Owner”) and the customer (“renter”) (collectively, the “parties”) and sets forth the respective rights and obligations of the parties in connection with the rental of the vehicle.

  1. The hirer confirms with his signature on this car rental agreement that he understands and accepts its terms and conditions. The agreement appears in two copies.
  2. One copy is given to the lessee, the other copy remains with Mountain Car EHF.
  3. The term of this Car Rental Agreement shall commence from the date and time of vehicle pick-up indicated just above the signature line at the bottom of this agreement until the vehicle is returned to the Owner and all terms and conditions of this agreement are met by both parties.
  4. The minimum rental period is 3 days (72 hours).
  5. The parties may shorten or extend the rental period by mutual agreement.
  6. If the Renter fails to return the rented vehicle within the agreed period, the Owner or the police may take possession of the vehicle without prior summons at the expense of the Renter.
  7. The Renter will use the rented vehicle for personal use only.
  8. He shall operate the vehicle only on properly maintained roads and parking lots. The Renter will comply with all applicable laws regarding the possession of a license to drive a vehicle and regarding the operation of motor vehicles.
  9. The Renter will not sublet the vehicle or use it as a rental vehicle.
  10. 10.The Renter will not leave Iceland with the vehicle.
  11. 11.The Renter will not allow another person to operate the vehicle, unless specified in the rental agreement. In the event of third-party driving, the Hirer shall bear full legal and financial responsibility for the resulting damage.
  12. 12.The owner does not charge for additional drivers.
  13. 13.The owner offers unlimited free mileage with all rented vehicles.
  14. 14.In the event of an accident or collision, the Renter will immediately notify the police and the owner. The Renter may not leave the scene until the police arrive or a damage report is prepared. The damage must be reported within 12 hours of its occurrence. If the tenant fails to do so, he will be held fully responsible for the damage.
  15. 15.In the Reykjavík – Keflavík area, the owner will repair the rental car free of charge.
  16. 16.If an abandoned or illegally parked vehicle is found, the owner or the police may take possession of the vehicle without prior notice.
  17. 17.Any changes or addenda to this agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties.
  18. 18.The rental agreement is governed by Icelandic law. Any disagreement between the parties may go to the Arbitration Committee of the Icelandic Consumers Association and the Icelandic Tourism Industry Association.

Prohibitions and Restrictions:

  1. The Renter shall always be liable for damage to the vehicle or passengers resulting from the following.
  2. Off-road driving
  3. Driving on rivers or other watercourses, as well as snow and ice banks
  4. Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and/or other intoxicants
  5. Violation of Icelandic law and/or the provisions of this rental agreement
  6. Serious negligence
  7. Wilful misconduct
  8. Driving on F-roads (unless expressly authorised by the owner)
  9. Motor racing
  10. 10.Transporting animals
  11. 11.Using fire in a rented vehicle
  12. 12.Smoking in a rented vehicle
  13. 13.Towing of vehicles, trailers or other objects
  14. 14.Carrying passengers for a fee, lending or subleasing a rented vehicle.

Booking and payment terms

We accept the following payment options:

  1. Credit card
  2. We charge your credit card at the time of booking.
  3. PayPal, Revolut
  4. Payment by cash or card upon arrival
  5. We collect your credit card information for security reasons only. Your credit card will not be charged.
  6. Bank transfer
  7. Your reservation will be effective as soon as you make payment.
  8. The Renter pays the full rental price at the time of booking or upon arrival, including optional extras.
  9. The rental fee includes mandatory liability insurance and personal accident insurance.
  10. 10.VAT (24%) is included in all prices and is not refundable.

Cancellation policy

  1. Cancellation ≥ 30 days in advance – free
  2. Cancellation 15 – 29 days in advance – 20% of the price
  3. Cancellation 7 – 14 days in advance – 30% of the price
  4. Cancellation 6 – 1 days in advance – 50% of the price
  5. Cancellation ≤ 1 day in advance – no refund
  6. VAT (24%) is included in all prices and is not refundable.

Rights and responsibilities of the Renter

  1. The driver must be at least 18 years of age and must comply with Icelandic laws and regulations when driving.
  2. The Renter is required to return the vehicle as follows:
  3. With all items that were in or on the vehicle at the beginning of the rental period. The Renter agrees that if anything is missing, his credit card will be charged for those items.
  4. In the same condition as at the beginning of the rental period, except for normal wear and tear resulting from use.
  5. At the predetermined time specified in the “Rental Period” in the rental agreement, or earlier/ later if mutually agreed upon.
  6. At the rental location, unless otherwise agreed. If the vehicle is left at any other location, the owner is authorized to charge the Renter a pick-up fee.
  7. With the same amount of fuel as at the beginning of the rental period (like-for-like fuel policy). Otherwise, the owner is authorized to charge the Renter for the missing liters of fuel.
  8. The Renter is not authorized to make repairs or changes to the rental vehicle without the owner’s permission.
  9. The Renter must use the correct type of fuel for the vehicle and shall pay the cost of fuel and other driving expenses during the rental period.
  10. The tenant is responsible for any parking fines, traffic fines and other charges that may arise during the rental period. The owner reserves the right to charge the tenant’s credit card if such fines/charges occur.
  11. If the Renter loses the license plate of the rented vehicle, the owner must be informed the same day. A fee applies.
  12. The Renter may not use the rented vehicle to transport passengers for a fee, lend it or sublet it.
  13. The Renter is responsible for payment of collection fees that may arise if the owner applies collection measures due to non-payment of overdue fees/fines by the Renter.
  14. In the event of an accident/damage to the rented vehicle, the Renter shall cover the cost of its possible transportation to the place of rental. Insurance offered by us has no impact. We have vehicles for vehicle transportation, so the price includes only the real cost. If the service is performed by us.
  15. The Renter is responsible for damage to the items transported and items lost or left in the rented vehicle.

Insurance

Liability insurance (*)

  1. The rental price includes liability and accident insurance.
  2. AC (Collision Damage Waiver) (*)
  3. Covers damage caused by a collision through your own fault.

AC Super (Super collision waiver) (*)

Covers damage caused by a collision through your own fault. Also includes tire replacement and repair of damaged windows, headlights and exterior mirrors.

Renter’s deductible

Price per day

  • 5,000isk (Car)
  • 8,000isk (4×4)

GP (Gravel Protection) (*)

Included in the rental price. Exception: for damage to the car windows, the Renter’s deductible is 20,000isk.

TP (Theft Protection) (*) – Included in the rental price.

The following damages are the lessee’s full responsibility:

  1. Damage to tires, windshields, headlights and exterior mirrors of the car (except for the purchase of AC Super insurance). Damage to the car’s engine caused by water ingress and damage to the vehicle’s undercarriage.
  2. Contact us if you have any problems in the Reykjavík – Keflavík region! Here we will try to help you free of charge.

(*) Note: All insurance coverage is terminated if the driver is under the influence of intoxicants, such as drugs, alcohol and/or medication, or has been negligent.

Additional charges

  1. Car pick-up/return at night (from 10pm to 8am)
  2. each 5,000isk
  3. Return of a car with insufficient fuel
  4. Cost for missing liters of fuel
  5. Cleaning of the car when it is significantly dirty – 5,000isk

Owner’s rights and obligations

  1. The Owner guarantees that the vehicle meets the requirements set for it.
  2. The Owner will make the rented vehicle available on the agreed date and time.
  3. In the event of a breakdown, the Owner shall decide on a workshop and ensure that the repair is carried out as soon as possible.
  4. In case of breakdown and immobilisation for more than 24 hours due to normal wear and tear or other reasons beyond the control of the Lessee, the Owner shall make a replacement vehicle available as soon as possible. The replacement vehicle shall be comparable to the originally rented vehicle.
  5. Any delays due to breakdowns, etc. do not affect the rental price. The Owner does not pay refunds for accommodation, reservations, tours, flights, etc.
  6. The Owner may restrict the use of the rented vehicle depending on road conditions, weather and natural hazards.
  7. The rented vehicle should have tires suitable for the season. Usually all-season tires are used, which meet legal requirements. If the planned route requires the use of a different type of tires, this should be notified in advance.
  8. The Owner guarantees to have valid liability insurance for his business.
