General Provisions
- This car rental agreement is entered into between Mountain Car ehf. (“Owner”) and the customer (“Renter”) (collectively, “Parties”) and defines the respective rights and obligations of the parties related to the vehicle rental.
- The Renter confirms by signing this car rental agreement that they understand and accept its terms. The agreement is made in two copies.
- One copy is received by the Renter, the other copy remains with Mountain Car EHF.
- The term of this Car Rental Agreement begins from the date and time of vehicle pickup indicated just above the signature line at the bottom of this agreement until the vehicle is returned to the owner and all conditions of this agreement are met by both parties.
- The minimum rental period is 3 days (72 hours).
- The parties may shorten or extend the rental period by mutual consent.
- If the Renter does not return the rented vehicle on the agreed date, the owner or police may take possession of the vehicle without prior notice at the Renter’s expense.
- The Renter will use the rented vehicle exclusively for personal use.
- The Renter shall operate the vehicle only on properly maintained roads and parking lots. The Renter will comply with all applicable laws regarding vehicle operation and driving licenses.
- The Renter shall not sublease the vehicle or use it as a rental vehicle.
- The Renter shall not leave Iceland with the vehicle.
- The Renter shall not allow another person to operate the vehicle unless specified in the rental agreement. In the event the vehicle is driven by third parties, the Renter assumes full legal and financial responsibility for any damage incurred.
- The Owner does not charge for additional drivers.
- The Owner offers unlimited free mileage with all rented vehicles.
- In the event of an accident or collision, the Renter must immediately notify the police and the owner. The Renter must not leave the accident scene until the police arrive or a damage report is completed. Damage must be reported within 12 hours of occurrence. If the Renter fails to do so, they bear full responsibility for the damage.
- In the Reykjavík – Keflavík area, the owner will repair the rented car free of charge.
- In the event a vehicle is found abandoned or illegally parked, the owner or police may take possession of it without prior notice.
- Any changes or amendments to this agreement require written form and the signature of both parties.
- The rental agreement is governed by Icelandic law. Any disputes between the parties may be referred to the Icelandic Consumer Arbitration Committee and the Icelandic Travel Industry Association.
Prohibitions and Restrictions:
- The Renter is always responsible for damages to the vehicle or passengers caused by the following actions:
- Off-road driving
- Driving through rivers or other waterways, and on snow and ice banks
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and/or other intoxicants
- Violating Icelandic law and/or the terms of this rental agreement
- Gross negligence
- Intentional misconduct
- Driving on F-roads (unless the owner has explicitly consented)
- Racing
- Transporting animals
- Using fire in the rented vehicle
- Smoking in the rented vehicle
- Towing vehicles, trailers, or other objects
- Charging for passenger transport, lending, or subleasing the rented vehicle.
Reservation and Payment Conditions
- We accept the following payment options:
Credit Card
We charge your credit card at the time of booking.
PayPal, Revolut
Payment by cash or card upon arrival
We collect your credit card information for security purposes only. Your credit card will not be charged.
Bank Transfer
Your reservation will be valid once payment is made.
- The Renter pays the full rental price at the time of booking or upon arrival, including optional extras.
- The rental fee includes mandatory third-party liability insurance and personal accident insurance.
- Value-added tax (VAT) (24%) is included in all prices and is non-refundable.

VAT (24%) is included in all prices and is non-refundable.
Rights and Obligations of the Renter
- The driver must be at least 18 years old and comply with Icelandic law and regulations while operating the vehicle.
- The Renter is required to return the vehicle as follows:

- With all items that were in or on the vehicle at the beginning of the rental period. The Renter agrees that if anything is missing, their credit card will be charged for these items.
- In the same condition as at the beginning of the rental period, except for normal wear and tear.
- At the pre-agreed time specified in the “Rental Period” in the rental agreement or earlier/later if mutually agreed upon.
- at the rental location unless otherwise agreed. If the vehicle is left at a different location, the Owner is authorized to charge the Renter a fee for vehicle retrieval.
- With the same amount of fuel as at the start of the rental period (like-for-like fuel policy). Otherwise, the Owner is authorized to charge the Renter for the missing liters of fuel.
- The Renter is not authorized to make repairs or alterations to the rented vehicle without the Owner’s consent.
- The Renter must use the correct type of fuel for the vehicle and cover the costs of fuel and other expenses related to the vehicle’s operation during the rental period.
- The Renter is responsible for all parking tickets, traffic fines, and other charges that may incur during the rental period. The Owner reserves the right to charge the Renter’s credit card for such fines/fees.
- If the Renter loses the license plate of the rented vehicle, the Owner must be informed on the same day. A fee applies.
- The Renter may not use the rented vehicle for paid passenger transport, lend it, or sublease it.
- The Renter is responsible for paying any collection fees that may arise if the Owner has to take collection actions due to non-payment of overdue fees/fines by the Renter.
- In the event of an accident/damage, the Renter covers the cost of potentially transporting the vehicle back to the rental location. Our insurance offerings do not affect this. We have vehicles for transporting vehicles, so the price only covers the actual cost if the service is performed by us.
- The Renter is responsible for damages to transported items and for items lost or left in the rented vehicle.

The following damages are the lessee’s full responsibility:
Damage to tires, windshields, headlights and exterior mirrors of the car (except for the purchase of AC Super insurance). Damage to the car’s engine caused by water ingress and damage to the vehicle’s undercarriage.

(*) Note: All insurance coverage ceases if the driver is under the influence of intoxicants such as drugs, alcohol and/or medication, or has been negligent.

Owner’s rights and obligations
- The owner guarantees that the vehicle meets the requirements set for it.
- The owner will make the rented vehicle available on the agreed date and time.
- In case of breakdown, the owner decides on the workshop and ensures that the repair is done as soon as possible.
- In case of breakdown and immobilization for more than 24 hours due to normal wear and tear or other reasons beyond the control of the Lessee, the Owner shall make a replacement vehicle available as soon as possible. The replacement vehicle shall be comparable to the originally rented vehicle.
- Any delays due to breakdowns, etc. do not affect the rental price. The owner does not pay refunds for accommodation, reservations, tours, flights, etc.
- The owner may restrict the use of the rented vehicle depending on road conditions, weather and natural hazards.
- The rented vehicle should have tires suitable for the season. Usually all-season tires are used, which meet legal requirements. If the planned route requires the use of a different type of tires, this should be notified in advance.
- The owner guarantees to have valid liability insurance for his business.
